My first week of marriage, after a short honeymoon trip to the beach, we moved over 900 miles away from my Mama and Daddy to live in my husband’s hometown of Schenectady, NY. I wasn’t concerned about the move, I’m an Army brat after all. I was looking forward to this new adventure in a new city with the man I loved…until the first night in our new place.A
As we got ready to go to sleep that night, Chris turned out all the lights and pulled the window shades. It.was.pitch.black. I felt this wave of fear run head to toe. I was used to sleeping with the door cracked or open with the light from the bathroom diffusing my room. This was an uncomfortable feeling, so I snuggled close to Chris only to be told that he “couldn’t sleep like that and needed his space when sleeping”. What?!? Are you kidding me???
I was baffled. My husband is a very caring and comforting person, but evidently sleep time was not for snuggling. This was completely unexpected and I was ready to head home to Mama! For the record, in the 30+ years since, we’ve both learned to make concessions when it comes to sleeping in the dark.
As a nightlight helped to alleviate my fears as a child, knowing and trusting God as my light brings peace in the midst of fearful circumstances in my life.
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? —Psalm 27:1
When we walk in the light of His presence, we experience peace and comfort. There is nothing that can separate us from God’s presence in Christ Jesus! We can rest secure in Him.
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful. —John 14:27
For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 8:38-39
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
What are you fearing today? Are you feeling alone and abandoned? Are you unsure of your future? Feeling anxious? Rest secure in the knowledge that your Creator loves you! He will never leave you nor forsake you. Jesus is your peace, security and hope. He is near. He is Immanuel, God with us!
Praise the Lord today for being your light and your salvation. Because He is your stronghold, you have no need to fear. Lay your fears at the feet of Jesus and rise and walk in peace. Praise Him today!
It’s my prayer that through this summer series we will, “from the rising of the sun to its setting”, focus on our amazing God. We’ll take the Word for the day and think about it, ponder it, pray it and practice it. We’ll allow it to really SOAK into our hearts and lives. And then we’ll SHINE — boast, rave, praise and celebrate God’s presence in our lives, reflecting Jesus to those around us!
