Do you ever have those days when you’re just having the blahs? You’re feeling down with a heaviness in your heart and spirit? I know I do. Sometimes it’s because I’ve got much on my mind and much in my schedule for the day. Sometimes it’s because life is hard and relationships are messy. Sometimes it’s because I’m burdened by the circumstance or heartache someone I know is experiencing. Sometimes…I just have the blahs for no apparent reason. During these times I have a choice. I can give into the blah and go about my day with my head down and feet dragging or I can turn to the One who is the lifter of my head!
But You, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts up my head. —Psalm 3:3
The psalmist is having one of those days. His foes are rising up against him and he’s feeling weary and despised. He’s fearful. But quickly the psalmist turns His eyes to the Lord. He declares who God is! He cries out to the Lord, and God answers him —God responds.
Notice how God responds:
- He is a shield about him.
- He is his glory.
- He is the lifter of his head.
- He listens.
- He grants him sleep.
- He sustains — I love this word picture — it means to lean against or lay upon, rest upon.
- He saves.
- He defends and fights for him.
- He blesses.
The psalmist praises God as his shield —his protector and defender, his glory — the One who gives his life true worth and meaning, and as the lifter of his head.
I love the word picture of God being the lifter of my head! Sometimes when we are discouraged and feeling defeated, that’s just what we need. Someone to stand beside us, someone to lean against, someone to protect and defend us and someone to remind us where we find our true worth and purpose in life. The Lifter of my head changes my perspective from an inward and downward gaze to an upward one. My focus and gaze are set on the Lord and who He is and what He has done — this lifts my head and my heart!
What’s causing you to walk around heavy-hearted and discouraged today? Look up! Look to Jesus! Find a renewed sense of joy, peace and perspective!
Father God, I praise you because you are a shield around me, O Lord; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head when I am weary or despised.
One of my favorite songs to listen to on these days is The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s, Thou O Lord. It’s basically Psalm 3 in song. It’s always so encouraging and uplifting to my soul and spirit. I invite you to listen as you begin your time of praise.
Spend some time reflecting on the verses from today and on the fact that God is our Peace, our Comforter and the Lifter of our heads!
It’s my prayer that through this series we will, “from the rising of the sun to its setting”, focus on and praise our amazing God. We’ll take the Word for the day and think about it, ponder it, pray it and practice it. We’ll allow it to really SOAK into our hearts and lives. And then we’ll SHINE — boast, rave, praise and celebrate God’s presence in our lives, reflecting Jesus to those around us.
