We live in a world where there is constant change. New versions, new models, new updates and new technologies are constantly before us. Jobs, relationships, the economy and the list goes on and on. There are times when I appreciate change, like when I redecorate a room in my house. Too often, I’m not quite as accepting and embracing of change in my life. I don’t like the uncertainty of change.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. —James 1:17
When my world is shaking, it is comforting for me to know that God does not change. He is steadfast! He is the God who is the same yesterday, today and forever! I can rely upon and trust Him because He will never leave nor forsake me. When I’m overwhelmed and unsure about the changes in my life, I can look to the One who is steadfast light.
Are you experiencing changes in your life today? Perhaps the changes are exciting and filled with possibilities and anticipation. Perhaps the changes are rocking your world and not what you expected, desired or anticipated. When change is hard and life is difficult it’s easy to question God and ask why.
We can rest confidently in the fact that God is not surprised by our questions and difficulties in understanding. He is infinite, sovereign and all-knowing. And He beckons us to cry out to Him and to pour our hearts out to Him! He is our refuge. (Ps 62:8). But this is one reason knowing the character and nature of our God is so important! We can trust and rest in who God is, even in the midst of not understanding why! He fulfills what He promises in a His timing. His presence is steadfast light shining in a dark and difficult world.
Read Psalm 136. This is a brief history of God’s working His plan, in His timing, among His people, Israel. The Israelites often grumbled, complained, questioned and doubted God. But for those who remained steadfast, trusting Him and taking Him at His a Word, they experienced the Promised Land and inheritance. What He promised was accomplished and we are the recipients of that promise in Christ Jesus! He has given us redemption, forgiveness, new life and eternal life. We can trust Him, even when we don’t understand it all! Did you notice the response in Psalm 136? “Give thanks…His steadfast love endures forever”.
What would be your Psalm 136 story? Consider writing out your story, and when you’re tempted to doubt, grumble and complain remember…His love endures forever! Give thanks!
Give thanks to the Lord knowing He is working in your life and that He does not change. Rest in His steadfast love and abundant grace! He is steadfast light!
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” —Lamentations 3:22-24
Spend some time reflecting on the verses from today and on the fact that God is a steadfast light shining in a dark and difficult world. He is faithful and unchanging and you can rest in Him.
It’s my prayer that through this summer series we will, “from the rising of the sun to its setting”, focus on our amazing God. We’ll take the Word for the day and think about it, ponder it, pray it and practice it. We’ll allow it to really SOAK into our hearts and lives. And then we’ll SHINE — boast, rave, praise and celebrate God’s presence in our lives, reflecting Jesus to those around us!
