Do you feel as if you need to have it all together and have all the answers? Do you need to control life’s circumstances and the people around you? Or perhaps you struggle with feeling as if you are never enough. Read on, sweet friend, today’s Scripture passage is for you.
Read Job 38:1-38.
What a humbling passage of Scripture! It certainly puts things into perspective for me. I am naturally self-focused and self-centered and therefore tend to make life “all about me”. I’m like that “proud” wave rushing the shore, thinking I’m “all that” and can control all things.
I lose sight of who God really is. It is humbling to realize how small and insignificant I am compared to Almighty God. It’s in this realization that I find myself responding like Job,”I am so insignificant. How can I answer You? I place my hand over my mouth. I have spoken once, and I will not reply; twice, but now I can add nothing.” (Job 40:3-5)
But it’s when I see God for who He is that life begins to make sense. I gain true perspective and find comfort, encouragement, freedom and hope. I know what life looks like when I am left to my own devices—it’s not pretty, it’s not productive. I need Jesus every moment of every day! Through Jesus, I am reconciled to God and brought into a relationship with the One who answers each of the questions we find in Job 38 with a resounding, I AM!
Who enclosed the sea behind doors
when it burst from the womb,
when I made the clouds its garment
and thick darkness its blanket,
when I determined its boundaries
and put its bars and doors in place,
when I declared:“You may come this far, but no farther;
your proud waves stop here”
Where do you find your confidence and strength? Where do you turn when you are in need of courage? Where do you turn when your attempts to control it spiral out of control?
We all need a daily reality check. We need to know and acknowledge that there is One who is greater than we are—more powerful, more mighty—”more” in all things and in all ways. Yet, He is the One who in His great love and mercy sent His Son to restore us into a right relationship with Him, a relationship that is personal and intimate.
It is in my relationship with Jesus that I find my true identity and worth. This gives me reason to boast in the One who alone is worthy. His name is the LORD God, Jehovah, and He alone is worthy of all praise, honor and glory!
What or who are you boasting in today? Are your attempts to control life leaving you frustrated and frazzled? Are you operating in your own strength and finding yourself worn out and weary? Pour out your heart to the God who is awesome in might and power and yet near to all who call on Him in truth. Spend some time reflecting on the verses from today and on the fact that God is the Lord of Hosts, Almighty, All-Powerful! Boast in who He is to someone today.
It’s my prayer that through this series we will, “from the rising of the sun to its setting”, focus on our amazing God. We’ll take the Word for the day and think about it, ponder it, pray it and practice it. We’ll allow it to really SOAK into our hearts and lives. And then we’ll SHINE — boast, rave, praise and celebrate God’s presence in our lives, reflecting Jesus to those around us.
