Get Real! A Heart Massage

Heart Ps 19_14

Heart Ps 19_14

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O God, my strength and my redeemer.”     Psalm 19:14

Have you ever had a deep tissue massage?  They say a massage has almost a cathartic effect, to the point of bringing you to tears.  Recently, I injured my back.  My husband was applying a muscle rub to the affected area and he began to press deeply into the tissue.  It was painful!  I found myself in tears.  But afterward… a sense of relief and my back was much better.

This idea of deep tissue massage was on my mind recently as I read Psalm 19:14.   The words just seem to penetrate my heart.

How was the meditation of my heart?

Meditation in this verse is the Hebrew word, higgayon, meaning a meditation, resounding music, whispering, mocking; refers to internal thoughts or musings. It denotes meditation or thinking in the heart as opposed to spoken words.  From the root word, hagah, meaning to moan, growl, mutter, meditate, plot, speak, devise, muse, imagine, utter.

Heart is leb referring to the totality of man’s inner or immaterial nature.  These are the deepest, innermost feelings and thoughts.

Is there a meditation down deep in my heart that is not pleasing to the Lord?

He has been speaking to me a great deal recently about my heart attitude.  I know how to say and do the right things most of the time—my outward attitude.  I even think I believe them and find reasons to justify them most of the time.  But the meditation of my heart can’t fool the Lord.  Is there something that is blocking the flow of His Spirit at work in me?  Is there something that is preventing me from being conformed more to Christ’s character?

I did some quick research on some tips and benefits of having a deep tissue massage:

  1. Increased blood flow — pressure to muscles increases blood flow and increases oxygen to the tissues of the body.  Increased blood flow encourages the release of toxins from strained muscles and speeds up the healing process.
  2. Eliminates scar tissue — breaks up and eliminates scar tissue.  Stressed muscles can block nutrients and oxygen from getting where they need to go and this will cause inflammation that allows toxins to build up in your muscle tissue. The inflammation and toxins contribute to pain and stress. Massage breaks up and loosens the built up toxins by loosening the muscles.  With toxins released, blood and oxygen can circulate as they should through one’s body.
  3. Improved posture — helps to body to realign itself.  Treatment encourages relaxation and lengthening of affected muscles and tendons.
  4. Pain relief — exerted pressure stimulates blood circulation to painful areas and thereby relieving pain.
  5. Drink lots of water — being properly hydrated before and after a massage is highly recommended.
  6. Often painful — painful during and you can experience soreness afterwards.
  7. Breathe deeply — during and after the massage.  Breathing helps oxygenate the muscles and allows the massage to do its work and ease discomfort.

I started thinking about how closely it parallels when I ask the Lord to examine my heart and expose any thoughts or mediations that are not pleasing to Him.  It’s like a deep tissue massage for the heart.  His Word does the work of a masseuse.

His Word breaks up the hard places of my heart —removing the toxins and scar tissue and bringing healing.  Things like past hurts, disappointments, anger, bitterness, envy, unforgiveness and sin are all exposed in the light of His Word and healing begins to take place.  Sometimes I am even a little sore afterwards, but the end result is so sweet!

His Word improves the posture of my heart —my thoughts, desires and actions are now aligned with God’s.  I can relax!  I find myself experiencing the peace, joy, comfort, hope and love of being in His presence.

His Word is the hydration I need on a daily basis as I work through the hardness of my heart.

His presence in my life relieves the pressures of life.  His presence becomes my place of refuge in times of pain and disappointment.  He is my Strength and my Redeemer!

HIs presence and time spent with Him in prayer is like breathing deeply.  Life begins to flow through my body and soul and eases the discomfort of the work He is doing on my heart.

Yes! I think I need to make a deep tissue massage of my heart a regular practice.  What about you?

Rejoicing in Him signature
