His Name Is…Advent Devotion: Day 6
We continue today looking at the prophecy from Isaiah 7:14. Yesterday we read of Jesus, Immanuel—God with us. The fulfillment of this prophecy reveals another name of Jesus to us.
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. —Isaiah 7:14

What is Jesus called in this verse? What do you learn about His character and nature?
What other name of Jesus do we find in the passage in Luke 1:32?

Luke 1:26-33 is the fulfillment of the prophecy in Isaiah 7:14:
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. —Isaiah 7:14
…you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. —Luke 1:32-33
He is the Son of the Most High, He will reign and of His kingdom there will be no end. From our cross-references in Scripture we learned:
- Jesus’ throne is for all generations and permanent.
You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.’” Selah. —Psalm 89:3-4
- God raised Him up and Jesus is exalted at the right hand of God.
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. —Acts 2:32
- Jesus is above all and over all things!
In Ephesians 1:15-23, Paul prays for believers to know the hope, power and future as those who have placed their trust in Jesus, who God raise from the dead and seated at his right hand in the heavenly places. All things are placed under His feet and He is head over all —above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
- Jesus is able to save us completely when we draw near to Him. He lives to make intercession for us.
Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. —Hebrews 7:25
- Jesus enables us to lay aside our sin and gives us endurance in all we encounter.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. —Hebrews 12:1-3
What are you facing today that has you weary and worn? Are you carrying a spirit of worry in you heart and soul? Draw near to Him and find help and mercy in your time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)
Is there anything you are making larger (exalting) more than trusting Jesus? He is greater than anything we will ever face. He is waiting for us to come to Him and find rest and peace for our weary souls and spirits. (Matthew 11:28-30).
Is there a decision you are facing today for which you need wisdom and strength to face? Fix your eyes on Jesus! (Hebrews 12:2)
Who or what are you exalting today? Jesus is the only One who rightly occupies that place.
His name IS…Son of the Most High and He is Exalted! Make Psalm 99 your prayer today —for He is exalted and holy is He!
Remember, all the rushing and impatience of NOW! causes us to miss the joy of the moment. Let’s commit to being intentional this Christmas season, to not allow the hurried and harried NOW! attitude rob us of the joy and peace Jesus has for us in the moment. Slow down and soak in the presence of Jesus —Immanuel, God with us. His presence renews, refreshes and enables us to rejoice in the ALL the moments of this often harried and hurried season.
