Sweet Words

Sweet Words Psalm 119

Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. —Psalm 119:97

In the last several weeks as we’ve read and journaled through Psalm 119, we’ve seen the psalmist pour out his heart and share his struggles. We’ve seen how he turns to the Lord and His Word for help, deliverance, safety, comfort and joy. This exclamation says much about the psalmist’s state of mind. It’s a declaration of his total need for and dependence upon God…I am Yours, save me. —Psalm 119:94.

It is a beautiful expression of the result of God’s Word getting into our hearts and minds, and the honest eruption that happens when God’s Word transforms our lives.

In the verses we’ve journaled this week, we see the psalmist not asking but exclaiming and declaring the goodness of God and the sweetness of His Word.

“This is a pure song of praise. It contains no single petition, but is just one glad outpouring of the heart.” (Morgan)

As we read through Psalm 119:97-112, we see in God’s Word we find:

  • Understanding
  • Wisdom
  • Protection
  • Direction
  • Life
  • Joy

Are you struggling to find the same delight in God’s Word as the psalmist expressed? It’s easy to allow life to disrupt and distract from our time in God’s Word. Our love for God and our desire to grow in a relationship with Him sends us to His Word, and the more we are in His Word, the more we want to spend time there. God’s Word becomes a sweet delight to our souls because it reveals who God is and what He has done, and allows us to see ourselves as we truly are. We CAN grow in our love for God’s Word and cultivate a greater desire to spend time there.

We need to take the time to get into the Word and allow the Word to work its way into us!

“He meditated in God’s word because he loved it, and then loved it the more because he meditated in it.” —Charles Spurgeon

Here are some practical ways we can grow in our love and devotion for God and His Word and cultivate a desire to spend more time meditating on the Word:

  • Give it your time; set it before you constantly.
  • Give it your attention and care; look after the word of God (it is my meditation all the day).
  • Give it a truly listening ear.
  • Give it your honor and your obedience.
  • Give it your appreciation; value it for all the good it has done for you and be thankful for all that good.
  • Give it your dependence and trust; let it care for you.
  • Give it your praise; speak highly of it before others.

Commit to growing in your devotion for and diligence to God’s Word this week. Experience the sweet fellowship of God’s presence as you discover the sweetness of His Word.

How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. —Psalm 119:103-104

Journaling Assignment: Read and journal through Psalm 119:113-120 (Samekh) and Psalm 119:121-128 (Ayin)
