Jehovah-Jireh

Names of God

What is your greatest need today?

Our Name of God this Week: Jehovah Jireh —The Lord Will Provide

Genesis 22:13-14 is the key verse and only passage where the name Jehovah Jireh is used

Jehovah, our self-existent One, You who possess essential life, who am I that You are mindful of me? If You are the all-sufficient One, why do You need me? Why do You want me? And what do I have to offer You? —Kay Arthur

Read Genesis 22:1-19.

This week you will spend your time in one passage, Genesis 22:1-19. You will journey with Abraham as he comes to God has Jehovah-Jireh, His Provider.

Walking in His Name: Jehovah—Jireh

Our passage this week is the story of an encounter Abraham has with God in which he is faced with a very hard decision. As you study this week, pay close attention to Abraham’s responses. Keep in mind that Jehovah is the name that means, all-sufficient, self-existent One, but it is also the name that refers to God as the One who reveals Himself to us unceasingly. Remember: His names reveal His character and nature and are revealed throughout Scripture to His people as they have a need to know Him by that name.

As you seek to walk in His name, Jehovah—Jireh, this week consider the following questions:

1. How does God as Jehovah—Jireh meet Abraham at his point of need? How does this encourage you today?

2. Why do you think God tests His people? Read the word study below for the word “test/trial” in the New Testament. Then read the following verses and note what you learn about the purpose for testing/trials in our lives and what it produces.

Word Study: test/trial – peirasmos putting tothe proof. When God is the agent, peirasmós is for the purpose of proving someone, never for the purpose of causing him to fall A state of trial in which God brings His people through adversity and affliction in order to encourage and prove their faith and confidence in Him. And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith. —Matthew 6:28-30

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. —1 Timothy 6:17-19

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. —1 Peter 1:3-9

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. —James 1:2-4

How do those verses encourage your heart today? Do they help you to view your trials and testings from a different perspective?

Not only has Jehovah foreseen your need for salvation and made provision through the death and resurrection of His Son, but He also sees your day-by-day needs. Kay Arthur

3. What is your greatest need today? Will you trust the Lord to be Jehovah-Jireh, Your Provider?

Remember, God is always making Himself known to us. The question is: what are the barriers in our lives that are preventing us from experiencing God’s presence in this moment? In this day? Are we so busy and distracted that we fail to seek God’s presence, to spend time in His Word and to worship and praise Him?

May our glorious God flood your hearts with an overwhelming sense of His presence, provision and peace as you seek Him in His Word this week. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the One who has not only met our greatest need, but who meets us daily just as we are, right where we are!

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. —Philippians 4:19
